North Dakota Women’s Network to Host Ready to Run Event in Bismarck
Program Aims to Increase the Number of Women Interested in Public Service

The North Dakota Women’s Network (NDWN) is hosting Ready to Run on Saturday, Feb. 8, in Bismarck as part of the organization’s effort to increase women’s representation in elected office. Ready to Run is a bi-partisan program for women who want to run for office, seek higher office, work on a campaign, get appointed to an office, or learn more about the political system.

While women are approximately half the population, they hold just 21.3% of North Dakota’s legislative seats, ranking the state 43rd nationally for the proportion of women. Only three women serve in elected statewide executive office in North Dakota—the State Treasurer, the Superintendent of Public Instruction and a Public Service Commissioner. Additionally, very few elected officials are women of color, despite the state’s increasing diversity.

“When elected officials more closely represent the electorate, policy discussions and outcomes are better,” said Kristie Wolff, NDWN Executive Director. “Our goal is to give women from all walks of life the tools to become more involved in the political process.”

The training aims to give participants a better understanding of North Dakota’s political system, strategies for positioning themselves for public leadership, and real-world advice on running a campaign.

The Feb. 8 training sessions include:

  • What Women Candidates Need to Know v
  • Laying the Groundwork for Public Life
  • Recruiting and Engaging Volunteers
  • Developing your Message
  • Budgeting and Finance
  • Closing Keynote by Justice Lisa Fair McEvers

Ready to Run will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC, 1640 Burnt Boat Dr. Registration for the day of training is $28. Ticket sales end Feb. 5.
